The Museum of Florida Art recently unveiled a new facade on the building’s outside wall, and it was a major coup for both the museum and the artist himself — an almost 90-year-old man who still paints every day.

Harold Garde created Iconoclast, a panel piece that is 8 feet by 24 feet, in 1974. It was displayed once — at an art gallery in New York’s Soho neighborhood. For decades, it was set aside, forgotten by nearly everyone, including the artist.

Garde explains what reignited an interest in the larger-than-life painting and why, even though he enjoys the attention he and his work still receives, he no longer seeks or needs critical attention.

He reveals the only people he’s trying to impress these days and why he still paints each morning in his studio.
