If you think not being able to read music or play a single note should keep you from becoming a Grammy, Emmy, Tony and Webby award-winning songwriter, then you need to meet Allee Willis because that is exactly her story.

Allee is famous for writings the “Friends” theme song, Earth, Wind & Fire’s “September” and “Boogie Wonderland,” the Pointer Sisters’ “Neutron Dance,” the Broadway musical version of “The Color Purple” and many more hits.

In fact, her songs have sold more than 50 million records.

She’s also a painter, a set designer, a writer and an award-winning filmmaker. Her latest project is a love song to her hometown of Detroit, a Motor City singalong called “The D.”

She explains how she recruited thousands of real Detroiters to sing in the movie and why she wants to combat what she calls Detroit’s excessively undeserved reputation.

Allee explains how even though she doesn’t really know how to do the things she does, she wouldn’t change a thing about pursuing her passions.
