It is virtually impossible to get along in life these days without the internet. But it is easy to forget how recent a development it really is. It’s amazing what a difference a couple of decades can make!

Check this out because you may have been watching when it happened. 21 years ago to this month, Katie Couric and Bryant Gumbel who were the hosts of NBC’s Today went on the air completely puzzled by this crazy new thing called the internet.

They got totally tied up in knots trying to dissect a simple email address!

It’s worth a look at this clip simply to realize how far we’ve come so fast. Do you remember your introduction to the internet? Did you struggle to explain it?

It gave the folks at BMW an idea for a way to introduce their all-electric car, the BMW i3. BMW touts that the i3 is built in a carbon neutral factory which generates its electricity from wind turbines.

What better way, the creators of the spot thought, to hammer home the point that this could be the next big thing than by getting the hosts together again, to be totally confused once more!

So they started the spot with the actual clip from 1994 and seeing it is priceless! Then, the commercial cuts to the present day with the two former hosts driving along, just as befuddled by this new hi-tech vehicle.

And of course, a commercial of this magnitude needs a special stage in which to make its debut, so it will air sometime during the first quarter of Super Bowl XLIX.

It is doubtful the car will have the impact of the internet, but it sure is a dream that’s very “Growing Bolder,” don’t you think?
