5 Questions: Life as an Anchor Mom, pages 18-19
— We’ve got a bonus Q&A with WKMG Local 6 anchor Lauren Rowe!
Q) Speaking of the news business, one of the biggest changes in journalism is the rise of social networking and engagement. Not only can viewers become a part of the coverage, sharing their photos, videos and commentary, they can interact with the anchors and reporters instantly on Facebook and Twitter. What’s the biggest benefit that you see from this so-called “new” media? How do you balance the tasks of promoting your work, remaining objective but also staying personally connected with your fans?
Relationships with viewers through social media can be really rewarding but also exhausting! I love having conversations on Facebook and knowing that our stories meant something to someone. But no one can keep up multiple conversations all hours of the day. I use social networking to share things about myself you may not see on the news desk. Sometimes that may be an opinion but usually it’s just something I care about. I try to play it down the middle most times. I see it as an extension of my journalism.
