Marc Freedman is on a mission — to help our society finally realize the power and importance of people over the age of 50 and 60.

He’s a social entrepreneur and through his work with his groups like Civic Ventures, an internationally recognized think tank on Boomers and social purpose, and Experience Corps, a nonprofit national service program for people over 50, Marc is at the forefront of changing the way we look at aging in this country.

Marc writes about his work in his new book, “The Big Shift: Navigating the New Stage Beyond Mid Life.” He says he wants to shine a light on the possibilities of life after 50 and celebrate those doing important things.

He says first and foremost, he’s helping to define a huge population that has its own integrity, even if it doesn’t yet have its own name. A generation ago, no one thought anyone over the age of 65 could still work and contribute to society. But today, it’s a whole new ballgame and Mark says Boomers are redefining every day what it means to age in America.

From second (or third and fourth) careers to using their experiences to mentor young people, now more than ever, those over 50 and 60 are utilizing their skills in exciting new ways.

Marc explains why he thinks adults need a gap year. Find out what it is and how Mark would like it to work.

Plus, he reveals the A-list celebrities who are helping him give out Purpose Prizes — a $500,000 award that’s given to social innovators who are in the second half of their lives.
