We’ve loved Marlo Thomas since she starred in “That Girl,” and now the four-time Emmy Award, Golden Globe and Grammy Award winner is making us laugh with her new memoir, “Growing Up Laughing: My Story and the Story of Funny.”

Marlo says she never wanted to write a memoir, but she was always telling stories about her childhood and people would tell her, “You should write these down. No one grew up like you.”

And they were right.

Her book is filled with stories from her childhood, growing up around her famous father, Danny Thomas, and his friends Milton Berle, Lucille Ball, Sid Caesar and George Burns. Marlo says those titans of comedy were directly responsible for developing her sense of humor.

Marlo shares some stories about her youth and how she realized from a really young age that you can get yourself out of a lot of corners if you can make someone laugh.

She also turned to some of today’s top comedians, like Jon Stewart, Billy Crystal, Chris Rock, Jerry Seinfeld, Joan Rivers and Kathy Griffin, to find out where their sense of humor came from.

Marlo says she learned that all shared one thing in common — one person in their life taught them at a young age what it was to laugh in life.
