He’s the voice behind one of the most famous lines in music history.

When you hear his bass voice boom out, “oom poppa omm poppa mow mow,” it can be no one other than the Oak Ridge Boys’ Richard Sterban.

Since 1972, Richard and his bandmates have been one of the most successful acts in country music history. Did you know the band nearly quit before it got going? Richard says they were close to going their separate ways until one man stepped in and convinced them to keep going — the Man in Black himself, Johnny Cash.

Richard tells those stories and many more in his new autobiography, “From Elvis to Elvira: My Life on Stage.”

He tells Growing Bolder how his once soprano voice changed almost overnight to his now famous bass. Plus, find out how he got his start touring with Elvis Presley. He shares stories about the King and reveals how he had to make the tough decision to leave Elvis to join the Oak Ridge Boys.

It’s a fascinating conversation with a man who had a front-row seat, and played a crucial role, in some of the greatest moments in country and rock history.
